Our Story

Bolinger_Family-2675x7So glad you came to visit our page! My name is Julie Bolinger, and I am the owner of Winding Road Gifts & Interiors. I am a graduate from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri (Go Tigers!) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design and Architecture (2003). Unfortunately, I chose to graduate during a recession and couldn’t find a job. So, I made a repeat performance at MU, obtaining a Master’s of Health Science degree in Ultrasound (2008). I have an amazing husband, John, who is a veterinarian and very busy with his own large animal veterinary practice in Tipton, Missouri. John and I share three beautiful children, Gage Alexander and Kade Isaac, and Avery Brielle.  At this time, I no longer work as a sonographer.  When I am not at the store, I spend my time assisting my mother in her daily living activities and with my very busy, growing kids.

Back in February 2012, while in the midst of some difficult obstacles complicating the lives of our immediate family, my beautiful mother, Jo Winkler, underwent a very serious operation on her heart. The surgery was a success, and her heart is doing well. Unfortunately, there were some extreme, unforeseen complications from the surgery causing my mother to suffer multiple debilitating strokes at the young age of 58.  She has undergone many hours of physical, speech, and occupational therapy to work her way back to where she is today. Her speech, balance, and cognitive skills are still very much affected, making her daily life a constant struggle. Depression is always around her edges as she continues to come to the understanding that she will never live the full, free life that she once lived.

We opened the doors to Winding Road in September, 2013 to break the repressing monotony that comes after the devastation of such a life-altering event. This store serves as a new beginning in the lives of my mother and myself. It lets me venture back toward my creative side and use my design degree, while allowing my mother the opportunity work by my side when she feels up to it, giving her a chance to regain some of the individuality and excitement her life once provided her. Whether prosperity or failure lies ahead of us, we are very excited to journey down this path!
